Tiger worms-look away if you're squeemish

In response to spinningayarn.

I have a fairly functional worm farm but am still learning too. I'd leave it till they come to the food before you add more food. See mine in the photo below they've eaten most of their food and are all working on what food is left there. Don't let them dry out and keep something over the top of it all cos they don't seem to like the light, it helps keep them moist too. I use a hessian sack or wet paper/cardboard. I get quite alot of little fruit flys in mine, I think it's because I over feed it a bit but have also read that it might need a very small sprinkling of lime, but haven't got round to it. They prefer mushy food but I give them all sorts. I never give them onion or citrus though as they don't like it. Mine seem to be enjoying a recent layer of shredded paper.

Hope that was some help.

Lovely! We set up our worm farm just a few weeks back, they seem happy enough, we have lots of baby ones. Can they get over crowded? Would we at some point have to upgrade to a bigger system or remove some of the worms?

Hiya,

We had a lot of fruit flies in our compost too. We used lime to even up the ph balance after composting too many lemonades from the tree after a storm. I wonder, do worms like lime?

Thanks! I think we'll hold off on adding any more food for a while- I can't see any worms on the surface of our bin, though it has a lid. I'll try adding a layer of wet paper to keep things moist! Thanks very much :)

Hey Jannelle, You must be doing something right if there are lots of babies. I move some worms out to the garden if they get over crowded.
Hi Stacey I don't think they "like" lime but a light dressing is reccommened to correct the balance. I'll let you know how I get on if/when I get around to it. Gilly

Yes you can make your own, you just need a suitable container. I started mine off in a mussel bouey cut in half with holes in the bottom. For their intial bedding I used horse poo and bought in the first lot of worms. There are so many people doing it now you could probably barter for some. I got tiger worms, they are the common composting ones.
